The Lake Piso Multiple Sustainable Use Reserve is located in North Western Liberia in Grand Capemount and Bomi Counties. It was designated as Multiple Sustainable Use Reserve at National level in 2003. It covers 964.77 km2 in which about 14,000 people live in 120 communties. Their livelihoods are mostly based on agriculture and fishing.
The Lake Piso Basin consists of unique combinations of habitats including coastlines, mountain forests, savannas, mangrove swamps, and sand islands, and is recognized for its plant endemism and biodiversity richness and for being an important bird area. It has also been designated as a Ramsar site under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, and is the habitat of many rare and endangered animals.
The Lake Piso is the biggest lake in Liberia and covers 110km2. It is a renowned location for bird watching throughout the year. It is also the home of manatees, and Nile and dwarf crocodiles.
The Warkolor Rainforest covers around 1,840 hectares, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lake Piso. It is the home of many endangered and protected animals, most notably the Western Chimpanzees. It’s peak culminates at 310 meters, and is covered in secondary and primary rainforest. It is a renowned site for bird watching, with many forest and coastal birds species such as Hornbills or the African Crowned Eagle. It is an excellent location for hiking on our handcrafted adventure trails.
Our intervention in the landscape was made possible through the co-investment opportunity provided by USAID Liberia through the West Africa Trade & Investment Hub, in partnership with the Forestry Development Authority of Liberia. Other partners include United States Forest Service (U.S.F.S)
